The short answer: the best value Goodyear welted boots in the UK are Berwick 1707's, from £215 to £240. You get genuine Goodyear welt construction, Dainite rubber soles made for UK weather, and boots that can be resoled for years. Most Made in England welted boots cost well over £300.

I'm Julian Nelson. I've run A Fine Pair of Shoes since 2006, and buying boots is a large part of my job. This guide covers what makes a welted boot good value, and which ones I'd buy.

What makes a boot good value?

Price alone tells you very little. Check these five things:

  1. Genuine Goodyear welt. The upper is stitched to a welt, and the welt is stitched to the sole. Cemented boots can't be repaired the same way.
  2. Resoleable. A good cobbler should be able to resole the boot more than once.
  3. Full leather upper. Look for real calf, grain leather or suede, not heavily coated corrected-grain leather.
  4. A sole that suits UK weather. Rubber soles such as Dainite handle wet pavements well. Leather soles look sharper but suit dry days.
  5. A price you'll still be happy with in five years. Cost per wear is the real measure.

Our picks

Boot Price Best for
Berwick 1707 Chelsea Boot (303) £215 Easiest everyday boot, no laces
Berwick 1707 Cap Toe Boot (321) £240 Smart-casual wear with jeans or chinos
Berwick 1707 Plain Derby Boot (657) £240 Relaxed casual wear with jeans and chinos

Berwick 1707 Chelsea Boot (£215). The best entry point into welted boots. It's built on the HO207 last in calf leather, with a natural welt and a Dainite rubber sole. It dresses up or down, and it's the lowest price on this list for good reason: no laces and a simple shape.

Berwick 1707 Cap Toe Boot (£240). The one I recommend most. It's a straight cap derby boot with a Dainite rubber sole, in dark brown or black grain leather. The cap toe gives it a smarter profile than a plain derby boot, so it works from the office to the weekend.

Berwick 1707 Plain Derby Boot (£240). No toe cap, so it's cleaner and more casual than the 321. It comes in Black Kudu and Autumn Spice Kudu. This is the boot for weekends, jeans and chinos.

Why Berwick 1707 offers exceptional value

At £215 to £240 you get a genuine Goodyear welt, a quality leather upper, a Dainite rubber sole, and a boot any good cobbler can resole. They are made by an established Spanish maker in Almansa, and they cost far less than comparable English-made welted boots.

Goodyear welt vs other constructions

Goodyear welted boots cost more to make than cemented boots, and they last much longer. Blake-stitched and stitch-down boots can also be good, but they are repaired differently, and fewer cobblers will work on them. If you plan to wear a pair for more than three years, Goodyear welt is the safest bet. Why the price gap with other UK makers?

Berwick's boots are made in Almansa, Spain, which is why they sit between £215 and £240. Boots made in Northamptonshire usually start at £300 and climb steeply. English-made boots are excellent, and some buyers will pay for the heritage. If you want the same construction at a lower price, this is where the value sits. Sizing

Berwick 1707 generally fits true to UK sizing, but fit can vary between lasts and models. If you're unsure, email us with your usual size and the brands you normally wear and we'll advise on the best size.

Looking after your boots

Brush them after wear, use cedar shoe trees, and condition the leather every few weeks. Rotate pairs where you can. Resole before the welt is damaged, not after.

FAQ

Are Goodyear welted boots worth the money?
Yes, if you wear them regularly. They can be resoled, which spreads the cost over many years.

What is the cheapest good Goodyear welted boot in the UK?
Prices vary by maker, but Berwick 1707 boots start at £215 with us, and the construction is genuine Goodyear welt.

Can a Goodyear welted boot be resoled?
Yes. That is the main advantage of the construction. Take it to a competent cobbler before the welt is worn through.

Do Goodyear welted boots need breaking in?
Most do, for a week or two. Wear them for short spells at first.
