Astorflex Shoes Review & Buying Guide (2026)
Written by Julian Nelson, footwear specialist at A Fine Pair of Shoes
If you’re looking for casual footwear made properly, using soft natural leathers, comfortable from the first wear, and still produced in Italy using traditional methods, Astorflex is one of the few brands that genuinely stands apart.
We’ve stocked Astorflex at A Fine Pair of Shoes for several years now, and growth has been consistently strong. That is not because the brand is heavily marketed, but because customers who buy one pair often return for another.
This guide covers:
-
who makes Astorflex shoes
-
what makes them different
-
the best Astorflex styles to buy
-
sizing and fit advice
-
how to care for Astorflex properly
-
whether Astorflex is worth the money
Who Makes Astorflex Shoes?
Astorflex shoes are made in Mantova, northern Italy, by the Travenzoli family, whose shoemaking history dates back to the 1820s.
Production remains in Italy, with an emphasis on natural materials, softer leathers, water-based adhesives, and environmentally conscious manufacturing methods.
When you handle an Astorflex shoe, the difference is immediately noticeable:
-
softer and more flexible leather than most competitors at the price point
-
natural rubber and crepe soles with excellent comfort underfoot
-
lightweight construction without the stiffness of heavily structured footwear
Astorflex occupies a very specific part of the market. These are not formal Goodyear welted shoes like Berwick 1707 or Tricker’s. Instead, the focus is relaxed Italian casual footwear built around comfort, flexibility, and understated style.
At roughly £160 to £290 depending on the model, Astorflex offers unusually good value for genuinely Italian-made footwear.
What Makes Astorflex Different?
Natural Materials and Comfort
Most Astorflex styles use nubuck, roughout, or suede leathers, paired with leather linings and natural rubber or crepe soles. The emphasis is clearly on natural materials rather than heavily synthetic construction.
That matters for comfort. Natural materials breathe better, soften more naturally over time, and mould to the foot more effectively than synthetic alternatives.
Lightweight, Flexible Construction
Unlike heavily structured footwear, most Astorflex styles use flexible stitched constructions designed for softness and immediate comfort.
Most customers find them wearable from day one, without the extended break-in period associated with more rigid welted footwear.
The Sadelflex, in particular, built on a crepe sole, is one of the most immediately comfortable shoes we stock.
Why Customers Buy Multiple Pairs
Astorflex has not changed direction dramatically season after season. The core styles that worked five years ago are still being produced in very similar forms today.
That consistency matters. Customers who buy one pair often return for another colour or style because they already know how the shoes fit and wear.
The Astorflex Range
Greenflex, the best place to start
The Greenflex is our best-selling Astorflex style, and with good reason. It is a clean, low-profile lace-up in soft nubuck leather, built on a lightweight natural rubber sole.
The silhouette works exceptionally well as a smart-casual shoe. It pairs easily with chinos, denim, cords, and relaxed tailoring, without looking overly formal.
The dark khaki colourway is consistently the standout seller. It is neutral enough to wear regularly, but distinctive enough not to disappear into the background.
The fit is slightly generous compared with most structured leather shoes, so if you are between sizes, sizing down half a size is usually the right choice.
Best for:
-
everyday smart-casual wear
-
a first Astorflex purchase
-
buyers wanting maximum versatility
Dukeflex, the casual workhorse
The Dukeflex shares some of the Greenflex’s versatility, but has a more rugged overall character. The sole is chunkier, the profile slightly more workwear-inspired, and the overall feel more robust underfoot.
If the Greenflex is the shoe you would wear to a relaxed lunch, the Dukeflex is the pair you would happily wear for a full day on your feet before heading to the pub afterwards.
It handles rougher everyday use particularly well without looking overly outdoors-focused.
Best for:
-
buyers wanting something more rugged
-
long days on your feet
-
casual everyday wear with workwear styling
Montflex, more character and depth
The Montflex is a chukka-height boot with the same natural material philosophy as the rest of the range.
The dark chestnut colourway is particularly strong, developing excellent depth and character as the leather ages. With occasional conditioning, the nubuck develops a noticeably richer appearance over time.
The extra ankle height makes it an especially good autumn and winter option, while still remaining lightweight and easy to wear indoors.
Best for:
-
buyers wanting a casual boot
-
autumn and winter wear
-
those wanting more visual depth and character
Sadelflex, the premium option
The Sadelflex is the most refined shoe in the Astorflex range and sits at the premium end of the collection at around £215.
It is a loafer built on a soft two-tone crepe sole, paired with premium roughout leather in mattone, a warm earthy reddish-brown shade that stands out subtly without becoming difficult to wear.
The crepe sole is the defining feature. It is exceptionally soft underfoot, flexible in wear, and noticeably quieter than harder rubber soles.
It feels closer to a well-made slipper than a conventional structured loafer.
Best for:
-
buyers wanting a premium casual loafer
-
those prioritising comfort
-
second or third Astorflex purchases
Bitflex, a more structured alternative
The Bitflex is a slightly more robust Chelsea boot style in premium suede leather, sitting somewhere between the Greenflex and a relaxed Derby shoe.
Compared with the Greenflex, it feels a little sharper and more deliberate in appearance while retaining the same easy comfort Astorflex is known for.
The dark khaki version remains the strongest all-round option.
Best for:
-
buyers wanting a slightly smarter silhouette
-
office casual wear
-
existing Astorflex customers wanting something different
How Astorflex Fits
Generally, Astorflex runs true to UK sizing, but with a slightly wider and more accommodating fit than structured Goodyear welted footwear.
If you are between sizes, or have narrower feet, sizing down half a size is usually advisable, particularly on the Greenflex and Dukeflex.
The Sadelflex loafer runs slightly more generous through the toe box, so narrower-footed buyers may also prefer a half size down there.
If you are unsure, contact us directly. We would always rather help customers get the sizing right first time than deal with unnecessary returns.
How to Care for Astorflex
Most Astorflex styles use suede or nubuck leathers, both of which benefit significantly from the correct care routine.
Regular maintenance
A good suede brush used after wear helps remove surface dust before it works into the leather and keeps the texture looking even.
This is the single most useful thing you can do for long-term appearance.
Conditioning
Saphir Médaille d’Or Nubuck & Suede Renovateur is our preferred conditioner for most Astorflex styles.
It helps restore colour, condition the leather, and provide light water resistance without dramatically altering the finish.
Apply lightly, allow it to dry fully, then brush gently afterwards.
Waterproof protection
For wetter conditions, Saphir Médaille d’Or Super Invulner provides stronger water resistance for nubuck and suede.
Applying it before autumn and winter wear is well worth doing.
Are Astorflex Worth Buying?
If you want highly structured formal footwear, probably not. That is not what Astorflex is trying to be.
But if you want:
-
genuine Italian-made casual footwear
-
exceptionally comfortable natural materials
-
lightweight, flexible construction
-
understated, timeless styling
then Astorflex is one of the strongest options available at this price point.
The Greenflex remains the easiest place to start. For many customers, it rarely ends there.
