A Visit to Dainite: Craftsmanship in Every Sole
Recently, Julian Nelson and Harry Johnson of A Fine Pair Of Shoes were welcomed by Tim Chapman, General Manager at the Harboro Rubber Company, for an exclusive tour of Dainite’s factory in Market Harborough.
From the very first step on the factory floor, it was clear that this is a place where precision and pride come together. Every sole is carefully crafted, every process refined over more than a century of making rubber soles and heels. The dedication of the team, their steadfast commitment to quality and consistency, was palpable at every stage of production.
Founded in 1894, the Harboro Rubber Company has been producing Dainite products in Market Harborough ever since. The name “Dainite” comes from a local phrase referring to the factory’s around the clock output “day and night” a testament to its enduring reputation for quality.

During our visit, we were shown how premium rubber compounds are selected, prepared and formed. The engineering behind each sole ensures a balance of durability, grip and understated elegance, qualities that have made Dainite soles and heels the choice of discerning shoemakers for generations

We observed a Dainite heel die ready to be placed in the press, where heat and pressure shape the rubber material into a finished heel block.

Once removed from the press, still warm to the touch, components move to the trimming team to be finished and packed for dispatch to shoemakers around the world.

Elsewhere in the warehouse, boxes of finished soles and heels bound for distinguished Goodyear welted shoemakers across the UK, Japan, the USA, Spain and beyond, await shipment. It was a vivid reminder that every pair begins its journey here, crafted with unwavering attention to detail at every stage.

The visit also offered a glimpse into the future. We were privileged to see new developments and prototypes that aim to enhance comfort, longevity and versatility without compromising the classic aesthetic our customers value. We are delighted to be specifying these innovations for upcoming styles in our Berwick 1707 and Tricker’s collections.
At AFPOS, we do not simply sell shoes, we celebrate craft. Seeing the skill, care and pride at Dainite first hand reminds us why every pair we offer carries more than a sole, it carries a legacy.
We look forward to sharing these new styles with you soon.
